Why Rap is Crap

Rap and Hip-Hop sales are on a decline. Many are claiming that the reasons are because when the music went mainstream it lost its freshness. I think that its reliance on unconventional lyrics has played a large part in its demise.

The music has become more than just a commentary on real-life problems. Now, they claim it is about the problems of being a poverty stricken kid growing up in the hood, or what not, and all the artists do now is talk about how they got so rich, and how many "hoes" they got, and how much "booty" they tag.

Honestly, their lyrics offend the public and set back the black community in ways they it does not need. Rather than substance, they offer vulgarity and offensive attitudes toward women.

And on top of that, the stigma of listening to the music, the rebellion and attitude that went along with it, is gone. The common mainstream sound is nothing more than an irritant, now.

People are tired of the gangsta attitude. Their fans have grown up and matured, and the younger generation is just too intelligent to fall for what rap offers.

Typically.. when a reputable blogger makes a factual assertion, they back it up with a link or some sort of evidence in support of their claim. That's why I pissed Doug off so badly. He'd keep making unsubstantiated claims and I'd fact check them, find out he's completely full of shit, prove it.. and then get banned.

Anyway.. to the point. I just checked the Billboard top 10 sales for this week and 6 out of the top 10 are hip-hop artists. Of course that doesn't show any trending lines. 6 months ago it might have been 9 out of the 10, and so your claim that hip-hop is declining may be true. We don't know. You provided no evidence.

However, that more than half of the top selling artists are in the hip-hop genre tends to dispute your point that people think "rap is crap" now.

That said.. comments like yours are what we call "git off muh lawn" posts.. It's social commentary from a biased point of view. Lynyrd Skynyrd are not recording anymore.. I don't think.. bummer..

This was based on statistics presented in my local paper - next time I'll photocopy it for you before I toss it. But let's just say, for sake of argument, that the decline of the music is not in play as I state: are you saying you support the pushing of the envelope (and remember, all of this trash is being listened to by America's youth)?

Every generation has called the next generation's music "crap". My parents were not thrilled with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

Art tends to reflect society, not create problems where they never existed.

For the record, I'm not a big fan of hip-hop. It's just not my taste, but I think the idea that art creates societal problems is a bit backwards.
